Mumbai was hit by heavy rainfall on Friday, resulting in severe waterlogging across several parts of the city and significantly affecting daily life and transportation. Authorities shut down an underpass in a waterlogged area as a precaution to safeguard commuters.
The relentless downpour led to slow-moving traffic on key roads, adding to the woes of officegoers and travellers. The situation also impacted air travel, prompting IndiGo Airlines to issue a travel advisory warning passengers of possible delays and urging them to allow extra time to reach the airport.
“Travel Advisory… A Rainy Day Reminder,” IndiGo posted on social media platform X. “With heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected over #Mumbai and #Kolkata, we’re seeing a chance of delays and slower traffic to and from the airport… Please check your flight status and give yourself a little extra time.”
The advisory comes just days after an Air India flight arriving from Kochi skidded off the main runway at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport due to wet conditions. The incident, which occurred around 9:27 a.m. on July 21, did not result in any injuries, and the aircraft safely taxied to the gate. All passengers and crew disembarked unharmed.
“Flight AI2744 experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate and has been grounded for checks,” an Air India spokesperson confirmed.
Following the incident, airport operations were temporarily shifted to the secondary runway while assessments of the main runway were conducted.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai and neighbouring regions, prompting officials to remain on alert.
